Boxing ring walk times explained: why the main event starts so late

By the MethStreams editors · Published

Boxing catches out a lot of new viewers. The poster says the event starts at one time, they tune in, and the fighters they came to see do not appear for hours. This guide explains why, and how to read the times on our boxing page.

The card starts long before the main event

A boxing night is a card of several fights. The first ones are undercard bouts between less well-known boxers. They lead up to the co-main event and then the main event. The advertised start time refers to that card, not the main event.

On MethStreams, the time we list is when the card begins, shown in the time zone set on your device. Open it then if you want to see the prospects on the undercard. If the headliner is all you want, you can usually come back two to four hours later.

Rough ring walk times

On cards held in the US, ring walks for the main event often come late at night on Eastern time, frequently around 11:00 PM or later. On cards in the UK, ring walks are usually between 10:00 and 11:00 PM in Britain, which is late afternoon or early evening on the US East Coast.

These are only rough guides. Every early stoppage on the undercard pulls the main event forward. Fights that go all twelve rounds push it back. Broadcasters also hold the main event for their own schedule, so the walk can be later than the fights alone would suggest.

Four belts, one division

Boxing never had a governing league. Instead the WBA, the WBC, the IBF and the WBO crown their own world champions, division by division, and whoever holds all four at once is the undisputed champion. One card can therefore have two or three bouts billed as world title fights, and fans can disagree about who the true champion of a division is.

Each body also keeps its own rankings. The top-ranked contender can be owed a mandatory title fight, which is why a sanctioning body sometimes orders a matchup.

Fight week

Big fights have a set routine. Fight week usually opens with a press conference, and the official weigh-in is held the day before the bout. Miss weight, and a boxer can be barred from taking the title even with a victory. If a headliner pulls out late, our listing changes with the new card.

Using the boxing page

  • Each event page has as many as three links, most reliable first, and they cover the whole card.
  • A card that is under way jumps to the head of that day, marked LIVE.
  • Links tend to go up just ahead of the opening fight, not the headliner.

If a link stops, move to another one or reload the player, and see our troubleshooting guide for VPN fixes. For MMA, read our UFC start times guide.
